Aspect Ratio Calculator — Display Master
The ultimate aspect ratio calculator and ratio tool. Calculate missing dimensions, simplify ratios to 16:9, 4:3, 21:9, and more. Works as a 16:9 aspect ratio calculator, 4:3 aspect ratio calculator, and screen aspect ratio calculator in both inches and pixels.

How it works
This tool combines aspect ratio simplification with resolution scaling. It uses the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) to reduce your width and height to their simplest whole-number relationship.
For example, a resolution of 3840 x 2160 has a GCD of 240. Dividing both numbers by 240 results in 16 and 9, giving us the standard 16:9 widescreen ratio.
How to use this tool
- Select a ratio from the pre-defined pills to lock in a target aspect ratio.
- Enter a known value for either Width or Height. The other dimension will update automatically.
- Custom Entry: To find a ratio, simply enter both Width and Height manually without selecting a pill first.
Why Aspect Ratios Matter for Creators
Composition & Framing
Different ratios change how you compose a shot. A 2.39:1 "Anamorphic" ratio feels cinematic and epic, while a 9:16 vertical ratio is optimized for mobile consumption like TikTok and Reels.
Platform Compatibility
Each platform has preferred ratios. Instagram supports 1:1, 4:5, and 9:16. YouTube is traditionally 16:9. Using the wrong ratio can lead to unwanted letterboxing or cropping.
Export Settings
Knowing the exact pixel dimensions for a target ratio ensures you export your video or image at the highest quality without stretching or distorting the content.
UI/UX Design
Designers use aspect ratios to ensure layouts are responsive across different devices, from ultra-wide monitors to narrow smartphone screens.
Common Professional Resolutions
| Name | Resolution | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Full HD (FHD) | 1920 x 1080 | 16:9 |
| Quad HD (QHD) | 2560 x 1440 | 16:9 |
| 4K Ultra HD | 3840 x 2160 | 16:9 |
| Cinemascope | 3840 x 1606 | 2.39:1 |
| Instagram Post | 1080 x 1350 | 4:5 |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 'Golden Ratio'?
The Golden Ratio is approximately 1.618:1. It is a mathematical relationship often found in nature and art that is considered aesthetically pleasing to the human eye. In design, it can be used to create balanced layouts.
Why do some 4K resolutions differ?
"4K" can refer to UHD (3840 x 2160) which is 16:9 for consumer displays, or DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) which is slightly wider and used in professional cinema. Always check which standard your platform or client requires.
How do I calculate a custom aspect ratio?
To find the ratio, divide the width by the height. For example, 1920 / 1080 = 1.777... which is 16:9. Our calculator does this automatically and simplifies it to the smallest whole numbers using the GCD method.
What is GCD and why is it used for aspect ratios?
GCD stands for Greatest Common Divisor. We use it to find the largest number that divides both the width and height evenly, allowing us to simplify the resolution into its smallest proportional ratio (like 16:9).
Does aspect ratio affect image quality?
Aspect ratio itself doesn't define quality, but using an incorrect ratio for your display or platform can result in stretching, pillarboxing (black bars on sides), or letterboxing (black bars on top/bottom).
